Eyelid lift

What is an eyelid lift? Known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, and gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert.

  1. Upper Lid Blepharoplasty This is an operation where excess skin and fat which appears as people get a bit older is removed from the upper eyelid.  This is often referred to as  lidding of the upper eyelids and the incision is placed in the natural crease lines of the upper eyelid about 8-10 mms above the eyelash margin.
  2. Lower Lid Blepharoplasty This procedure addresses the excess skin and  fat  which accumulate on someone's lower eyelid as they age to give them so-called 'bags' under their eyes.  It can also be used to correct very low-sitting rings under people’s eyes  which sit almost  down on the cheek and sometimes extend out on to the cheekbone or malar area.  It can be done in two different ways: either through a traditional open approach where there is an incision placed literally underneath the eyelashes or it can be done through the membraneouse inside lining of the eye, called a trans-conjunctival approach.  This avoids a scar on the outer eyelid although this usually heals extremely well. Through either approach one is able to remove or re-drape and re-contour the lower eyelid fat and skin.

Who would be suitable for an eyelid lift? If you have any of the signs of aging then you may be appropriate for a blepharoplasty. Often other factors need to be addressed in addition to or instead of just the eyelids. Drooping eye brows or mid facial descent can give the impression of lidding of the upper eyelids or rings under the eyes. An experienced plastic surgeon will need to advise on the most effective procedure for you.  Eyelid surgery is usually performed on adult men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles.
